Blacki is a co-founder of Brooklyn Bio a for-hire synthetic biology research group in New York City. He has competed twice on teams that won top prizes at the International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition. Over the years he has actively been involved in both NYC community labs Genspace and Biotech Without Borders. In the past he built a DIY mycology lab focused on mycoremediation.

Blacki is also currently a graphics editor at The New York Times where he develops data-driven stories and interactive visualizations. Prior to this he worked at Bloomberg's R&D department and as a data journalist at Bloomberg News. Much of his reporting over the years has been at the intersection of climate science, economic policy and politics.
