After 10 years at Microsoft Research studying speech recognition, Derek Jacoby returned to grad school at the University of Victoria. Initially to study synthetic biology, but research interests took him back into computer science and he received his PhD in 2016 on a topic of low-cost electroencephalography devices for the treatment of attentional disorders. While there, Derek founded the Victoria Makerspace, Canada's first makerspace with a dedicated molecular biology lab. During visits to the San Francisco Bay area he also helped build out the BioCurious lab and was first a student and then a digital biology instructor at Singularity University at NASA Ames.
