Jan-Maarten Luursema is a researcher at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen where he develops training courses and training technology for minimally invasive surgery. He oversees a research line on the role of impulsivity in training for surgical damage control. He has a background in the Visual Arts, Medical Art, and a PhD in Cognitive Psychology.

Turning a life-long fascination with biological form and function into practice, he recently started working on projects at the Waag Society Open Wetlab in Amsterdam. This work includes developing technology to investigate the ecology, behavior, and perception of the very small. An example is this temperature controlled Winogradsky box. He is also trying to get a slime mold to talk.
