Justice Toshiba Walker is a Learning Scientist and Doctoral Candidate at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education where he studies emerging technologies and their benefits in concept and skill building. His recent work involves the use of a portable wetlab device—the biomakerlab—in formal and informal K-12 settings to teach synthetic biology topics within traditional life science frameworks. Justice is interested in understanding how such approaches afford students opportunities to generate living artifacts that are both useful and of personal interest, which ultimately situates learners are producers of knowledge rather than consumers of previously discovered phenomena. Justice also collaborates with the learn.design.bio conference where researchers, scientists and educators convene to discuss the implications of and opportunities for synthetic biology in education and society. In his spare time, Justice enjoys hanging out with his two canine pals—Taffy and Langston.
