I have a unique disciplinary mix of qualifications across Architecture (BA from Newcastle University, UK), Design, Media and Computation (MPhil and PhD from Cambridge University, UK) and Synthetic Biology (MSc from Newcastle University, UK). My specialism is in Microbial Synthetic Biology for the design of active materials and living manufacturing and I lead on projects with over $1M including Thinking Soils to develop a mechanical sensing bacteria which induce the formation of mineral crystals to strengthen heavily loaded soils. The project has been featured extensively in the National (UK) and international media including articles in The Times and AAAS Science and Video Interviews for NBC and Reuters. I also edit the Routledge Bio Design book series and am working on the first volume entitled Living Manufacture.
