Nicole Bakker

Nicole Bakker is a graduate researcher at Community Biotechnology Initiative and the Mediated Matter group in the MIT Media Lab. Prior to coming to the Lab, she was a candidate in the inaugural cohort of the Master in Design Engineering at Harvard. Her current research is about community-driven design of living technologies, with a focus on enabling renewable energy solutions and local bio-based materials production in the context of the circular economy.

Her book, Photovoltaics in Historical Built Environments (2013) inspires architects and policymakers to integrate PV-technology in cultural heritage. Nicole was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, the Harvard GSD Peter Rice Prize for Excellence in Structural Design (2018) and is recipient of various awards for her undergraduate studies in the Netherlands.
