Thomas Burkett – BUGSS founder, microbiologist, educator
Dr Thomas Burkett is the founder and executive director of the Baltimore Under Ground Science Space (BUGSS), a DIY bio lab that provides a place for people interested in biotechnology to learn, practice, and hang-out with others fascinated by the world-changing potential of synthetic biology and biotechnology. Dr Burkett is also the professor of biotechnology at The Community College of Baltimore County and he heads Chesapeake Bioworks creating educational kits and other biotech products. Though all of these ventures he supports democratic access to science and empowers others to take an active role in developing the field of biotechnology.
