In 2001 Tom Peeters obtained this masters in biology at KU Leuven (Belgium). Next he went to the University of Florida (USA) to gain more experience in biotechnological research. Back in Belgium, he started his PhD at KU Leuven elucidating signal transductions in yeast. After graduating in 2007, he started his post-doctoral research in synthetic biology at UPF in Barcelona (Spain). Here he manipulated yeast cells to behave as basic logic gates for biocomputing. Since october 2009 he is a lecturer microbiology and biotechnology at the Erasmus University College Brussels. Inspired by the global DIYbio movement, he initiated in September 2016 the Open BioLab Brussels that opens once a week to welcome anyone with an interest in (DIY) bio sciences. Since october 2017 Tom is awarded a 3-year fellowship, so he can devote part time in building out the BioMedical Science Center affiliated with the BA biomedical laboratory sciences.
