udayan umapathi

Udayan is a designer, artist and an experimental physicist. He is currently at the MIT Media Lab advised by Prof.Hiroshi Ishii and Prof.Neil Gershenfeld. Inspired by the idea of “computation as a way of understanding the universe” his work focusses on making physical materials compute. His current research investigates how information in physical materials can be made visible and manipulated through computation. He is now applying some of his discoveries to biology with the ultimate goal of blurring the boundary between the natural and synthetic computation.

Udayan’s work spans across digital fabrication, micro-robots, molecular biology, semiconductors, consumer electronics and art. In the past he has worked at various research labs and in the industry and he has also co-founded a couple of start-ups.
